case study - North Auckland line remediation

Trusted Short Term Delivery

Ascon was engaged as a civil construction contractor by John Holland to support KiwiRail's Flood Recovery Workson the North Auckland Line (NAL) near Makarau, north of Warkworth. This critical rail infrastructure remediation project covered the 91km–97km section of the rail corridor and required specialist expertise in bulk earthworks, drainage installation, retaining wall construction, piling, and environmental management.

Operating within a tight delivery window between April and June 2024, Ascon was entrusted with managing a standalone section of the project using a dedicated crew of five. Through careful planning, efficient project management, and a strong commitment to safety and quality, we completed our works two weeks ahead of schedule.

Following the successful completion of our section, our team was requested to assist another contractor to help deliver the remaining works on time—demonstrating Ascon's reputation as a trusted rail infrastructure contractor capable of performing under pressure.

Challenges and Solutions

Delivering rail corridor construction in a remote location presented logistical and operational challenges, particularly around workforce wellbeing and maintaining productivity throughout the project.

To reduce travel fatigue and improve safety, Ascon arranged accommodation for our crew within a 45-minute radius of the worksite. This ensured our team remained well-rested and focused while maintaining consistent performance across the project.

Strong leadership also played a vital role. Our site supervisor maintained Ascon's high standards for health and safety, quality assurance, environmental compliance, and team culture. During one particularly challenging period of wet weather, Ascon's Director visited the site before dawn to prepare a hot BBQ breakfast before the 7am pre-start meeting—reinforcing the importance of looking after our people while maintaining momentum on site.

This people-first approach contributed to a motivated workforce and uninterrupted delivery of critical rail infrastructure works.

Ascon’s Value

Makarau was an environment that relied on trust and minimal oversight, our team leader consistently upheld the standard expected of Ascon — leading with integrity and calm assurance. Beyond just getting the job done, we looked after our crew in a way that recognised their wellbeing and growth as just as important as productivity. Our team naturally aligned with others on site, building relationships, sharing goals, and working together to maintain strong delivery momentum.
