Why do we do what we do?
Because labour hire in Aotearoa can — and should — be better.
Ascon was started after seeing the same issues play out across sites again and again. Skilled workers being treated as numbers. Poor leadership creating friction and accidents on site. Capable people being placed into roles without the support or clarity they needed to succeed.
Projects didn’t struggle because the work was too complex. They struggled because the workforce wasn’t set up properly.
That didn’t sit right with us.
So we built Ascon to do labour hire differently — with people, leadership, and values at its core.
Labour Hire Is About People, Not Just Placement
Labour hire isn’t just about filling a gap on a roster or having a body on site. It’s about putting the right person into the right environment — and backing them once they’re there.
When you walk onto a site, you can feel straight away whether the workforce has been set up well. Communication is clear. Expectations are understood. People know who they report to and what good looks like.
We’ve also seen the opposite — workers dropped onto site with little context, unclear direction, and no real support. That’s where productivity drops and safety risks creep in.
For us, labour hire comes with responsibility. We don’t just supply people — we take ownership of how they’re placed, how they’re led, and how they’re supported on site.
That’s mahi with mana in practice.
Backing Local Workers for the Long Term
Strong labour hire relies on a strong local workforce.
Skills take time to build. Reliable operators, confident hammer hands, and emerging site leaders don’t appear overnight. They’re developed through experience, consistency, and being given opportunities to step up.
At Ascon, we focus on growing capability from within. That means upskilling locals, supporting people into leadership, creating relationships with workers' whanau, and helping them build sustainable careers.
It also means creating space for diversity. Supporting people to work in their own communities. Ensuring women feel welcome on site. Creating an environment where workers feel respected and heard.
That’s how we retain good people — and why they stick with us.
Who We Work With
We partner with clients who value strong site culture, clear leadership, and safe delivery.
We show up prepared. We place people thoughtfully. And when challenges arise, we deal with them early and head on.
Our role doesn’t stop once a worker steps onto site. We stay connected, we support our people, and we take responsibility for the standard we bring to each project.
That approach creates safer sites, more stable teams, and better outcomes for everyone involved.
Looking Ahead
For Ascon, growth is about impact.
More local workers staying in Aotearoa.
More people stepping into leadership with confidence.
More sites supported by labour hire that actually adds value.
Success is seeing people grow — in skill, mindset, and responsibility. Watching someone realise their potential and back themselves on site.
That’s why we do what we do.
Because Mahi with Mana is the standard we hold ourselves to — every placement, every site, every day.
